Zurich: The gay community sends a strong signal against LGBTI+ hostile violence!

BY MICHAEL SOZE

After there have been repeated attacks against people from the LGBTI+ community in Switzerland recently, party organizers and club operators have got together with the Pink Cross, Zurich Pride, HAZ, Bar & Club Commission and the Pink Cops to consider what can be done. The campaign is also supported by the Heaven Club and the Kaufleuten, as well as by the party series Boyakahsa.

Both the club operators and the party organisers want to become a safe haven for all those who are exposed to verbal or physical hostility.

Everyone wants to help – from the bouncer to the person at the cash desk. If someone becomes a victim of violence, they can approach everyone and receive effective help.

In order to be able to help quickly, the brains behind the campaign have created a four-point plan of action:

  1. rely on de-escalation and keep yourself safe: Call the police on 117, ask your immediate neighbors or friends for help Ask possible witnesses to stay on site.
  2. take care of your health: if necessary, call the ambulance at 144 or see a doctor in an emergency.
  3. collect evidence: Collect evidence of the aggression, write down the perpetrator’s characteristics, for example on your mobile phone, so that you can give the police as accurate a description as possible.
  4. seek advice: whether at the checkpoint, victim support, the LGBTI+ Helpline or PinkCop – these institutions will also help you to file a report.

You can find further possibilities of support here:

  • You can reach the free LGBT+ Helpline from Monday to Thursday between 7 pm and 9 pm by calling 0800 133 133 133 or always by e-mail hello@lgbt-helpline.ch or directly at the LGBT HELPLINE . You can also meet personally with advisors.
  • PinkCop is an independent and nationwide association for LGBTI+ in the police force. These police officers will also be happy to accompany you to a police station to file a report. You can reach PinkCop via the e-mail address info@pinkcop.ch or via Facebook under PinkCop Switzerland.
  • The Checkpoint and its team also offer you psychological support after incidents of violence. All information can be found on the MY CHECKPOINT website or on Facebook under Checkpoint Zurich. DR.GAY also offers help.
  • The Zurich Victim Counseling Service supports LGBTI+ persons by telephone from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on 044 299 40 50, or by e-mail at opferberatung@obzh.ch.

Important:

Even if you do not wish to file a report, please report the incident to the LGBT+ Helpline hello@lgbt-helpline.ch so that it can at least be recorded anonymously.

Only with statistics can the police coordinate their actions and can political demands to improve the situation be substantiated. Perpetrators of violence often exploit the fear of the victims and assume that no report will be filed and that they will get away with it unpunished – this can no longer be allowed!
